Marble Staircase – Supreme Court, Washington DC

Black and White, Sony A580 No Comments by Bryon Lippincott
Supreme Court Staircase

We visited the supreme court building while we were in Washington, DC on vacation in October. It is an amazing building, Marble everywhere. There is a lot of amazing history that has taken place in the building. Of course it is packed with people touring the building and learning about everything that has gone on there. I found there are at least two of the these marble staircases in the building. The workmanship that went into these is amazing, the steps are all individually fit and hold each other up. There is no center support for the staircase.

For Travelers

You can find these amazing stairs in the Supreme Court building, in Washington, DC

We camped at Greenbelt National Park in DC and took the train downtown. The park was really nice and the train was very easy to take, Definitely a good way to beat downtown traffic.

For Photographers

This is a single image processed in Lightroom 4. The black and white conversion was done in Lightroom, then I worked with the clarity brush and added a vignette. It was shot at ISO 1600 so I had to do some noise reduction as well. In Photoshop CS6 I did some burning on the shadows to enhance the character in the marble.

Natural Bridge, Yoho National Park, British Colombia

Black and white Photo of Natural Bridge, Yoho National Park

We stopped at the Natural Bridges in Yoho National Park in BC on our road trip last July. It was really just an excuse to let the kids run the wiggles out and get a bite to eat.  I wasn’t expecting anything really grand or spectacular on the drive in to the site, but when we got there it turned out to be quite the amazing location. The river used to flow over the rocks in the photo, but over time it eroded the rock and now flows under the remaining rock, forming a natural land bridge.  It ended up taking quite a while to get this photo. A couple of guys in their late teens/early twenties decided it would be cool to walk out on the bridge and goof off for a while and risk their lives. I think I had to wait about 30 minutes to get the clear shot that I wanted.

black and white HDR Photo of Deception Pass Bridge, Deception Pass State Park, Washington

While on our road trip this summer we stayed with some friends in Washington. One of the days we were there they took us out to the coast to Deception Pass State Park. The kids had a blast playing in the ocean. I love bridges and thought this perspective on the bridge was quite stunning.

The Beauty of Thorns

Photo of a rose bush with the thorns in focus from the Bailey Wye at the Henry Doorly Zoo, Omaha, Nebraska

I took the kids to the Henry Doorly Zoo last week on the last really good day before our weekend storm. I found this while they were playing on the playground at the zoo. The sun was low enough in the sky that is was hitting the rose bushes and highlighting the thorns. I keep thinking that I am going to run out of things to shoot at the Zoo but  so far I still find things here and there. I think it is good mental exercise to keep looking for new angles and compositions in familiar surroundings.

Ripe for the picking

Photo of the seed head of a prarie grass plant

When I took this photo originally I was planning on it looking like one of those warm, bright, grass waving in the breeze photos. But when I got around to processing it I kind of liked this version better. I really like the contrast between the soft, downy parts of the plant and the little black stems that hold it.

Comfortable in my freckles

Black and white photo of a giraffe from the Henry Doorly zoo in Omaha, Nebraska

I took a couple of hours off to take the kids to the Zoo on thursday, it was 68 degrees in January! Who can pass that up? It was great to wander and take pictures and let the kids play. It still amazes me every time I go there I find something new to shoot. I haven’t migrated to shooting people yet but maybe someday I will. The giraffes were the last stop of the day before I had to go back to work.

A glimpse at the windy city

Photo of the chicago skyline from near the Shed Aquarium

On our vacation two summers ago to attend a family wedding we managed to stop and see the Shed Aquarium in Chicago. It has a great dolphin show, that the kids loved. I really didn’t get any good shots of the aquarium but I did get this one of the Chicago skyline from just off the steps of the Shed Aquarium. We did manage to hit the Cheesecake Factory downtown and wander the streets for a little bit before heading on to our destination.

Buttes rise from the prarie, Badlands National Park

Buttes rise from the prarie, Badlands National Park, South Dakota

I am just beginning to process all the photos I took on our road trip this summer. This is from our first stop Badlands National Park in South Dakota. We were itching to get out of the car and hike, so we searched the park map for the longest trail and took off. This was taken along the Castle Trail, which is accessable at via 3 separate trailheads along hwy 240 in the north section of the park. It is a really nice hike, not too strenuous but it gets very hot, we started early and still managed to run out of water. If you decide to make the trek, start early and take lots of water in the summer.

More Leaves from the Henry Doorly Zoo

Black and White, Nebraska, Places No Comments by Bryon Lippincott
leaf 1

If you read through the blog here you will realize that we spend a lot of time at the Henry Doorly Zoo here in Omaha. The kids love wandering around and looking at all the animals and various hands on exhibits. This past year they added free all you can watch IMAX movies at the LIED IMAX theatre. So we can catch all the latest IMAX Movies as well as get outside and walk around.  The last few times we have visited the zoo I have tried to find and photograph the many different styles, shapes and textures of leaves as we walk through the zoo. I tend to prefer them in black and white, it seems to emphasize the shapes and textures without overwhelming me with green

Old Market Boogie Basics

I found this Aluminum sign while on a date with my amazing wife, we were wandering around the Old Market in Omaha. We took some pictures of her and of us together. It was really nice to spend a few hours together with out the chaos of our wonderful children. The textures and less noticable etchings in the aluminum caught my eye.

The odd things that catch your eye

Black and White, HDR, Nebraska, Places No Comments by Bryon Lippincott

The weathered railings of equestrian compound extend into the distance at sunset

I found this fence while shooting a senior portrait session last week. It was nearly sunset, and the light seemed to fall on the fence in an inviting way. This is my first attempt at using Lightroom 3, We finally broke down and bought it to make editing more efficient, unfortunately there is also a learning curve. I do really like the organizing and editing functions in one platform, as well as only having on file on the disc until export.

The Many Faces of Buddha

I found Buddha in a small shop in China town in San Francisco, CA. In reality l found not just one Buddha but a whole table of them, with different expressions and postures. They were all holding a candle to light a path, or the corner of the room where they were destined to reside. I really like this little scene, set up to draw the eye of the wandering tourist, it seems to call out with a tranquility that you begin to crave in China Town.

The Grand Promenade, Mt. Rushmore, SD

This is the entrance to the Mt. Rushmore Memorial, this is not a view that you get by walking in from the parking garage. From the front it looks kind of dull and lifeless. I managed to get this shot in the early morning before the crowds arrived. The disappearing arches really drew my eye, along with the textures of the granite and the concrete ceiling.

I have a lot more shots to process from Mt. Rushmore. What has caught your eye and pulled you in on your visits?

Calgary Stampede

I took this while watching the Stampede parade in Calgary, AB this summer. The people in front of us including the owner of this hat, had an interesting way to make the parade more interesting. They brought sidewalk chalk and drew circles in the street with their names in them. The first one to have a horse poop in their circle was the winner.

On another topic I have never seen so many cowboy hats and boots in a major city as I saw in Calgary for the stampede. It was a generally a very urban cowboy look, more glamorized than what you would see in a real working cowboy town. But it was fun to look at and photograph. I would definitely recommend going, it is an amazing experience.
