Gandalf’s Chair – Skidaway Island State Park, Georgia

Photo of a bench and a tree in Skidaway Island State Park, Georgia

Skidaway Island State Park

We camped at Skidaway Island State Park this fall on our east coast road trip. We took a sunset walk along one of their nature trails. I really love the look and feel of the area, the trees are all covered in hanging wisps of moss. there are marshes covered with prairie style grasses with the occasional palm tree sprinkled in among the trees.  We found this bench and tree on the hike, I immediately fell in love with this tree, it made me think of a mystic fantasy forest.

Natural Bridge, Yoho National Park, British Colombia

Black and white Photo of Natural Bridge, Yoho National Park

We stopped at the Natural Bridges in Yoho National Park in BC on our road trip last July. It was really just an excuse to let the kids run the wiggles out and get a bite to eat.  I wasn’t expecting anything really grand or spectacular on the drive in to the site, but when we got there it turned out to be quite the amazing location. The river used to flow over the rocks in the photo, but over time it eroded the rock and now flows under the remaining rock, forming a natural land bridge.  It ended up taking quite a while to get this photo. A couple of guys in their late teens/early twenties decided it would be cool to walk out on the bridge and goof off for a while and risk their lives. I think I had to wait about 30 minutes to get the clear shot that I wanted.

Deception Pass Bridge, Deception Pass State Park, Washington

black and white HDR Photo of Deception Pass Bridge, Deception Pass State Park, Washington

While on our road trip this summer we stayed with some friends in Washington. One of the days we were there they took us out to the coast to Deception Pass State Park. The kids had a blast playing in the ocean. I love bridges and thought this perspective on the bridge was quite stunning.

The Beauty of Thorns

Photo of a rose bush with the thorns in focus from the Bailey Wye at the Henry Doorly Zoo, Omaha, Nebraska

I took the kids to the Henry Doorly Zoo last week on the last really good day before our weekend storm. I found this while they were playing on the playground at the zoo. The sun was low enough in the sky that is was hitting the rose bushes and highlighting the thorns. I keep thinking that I am going to run out of things to shoot at the Zoo but  so far I still find things here and there. I think it is good mental exercise to keep looking for new angles and compositions in familiar surroundings.

Wispy Clouds of Cotton

photo of wispy clouds over the Desert Dome at the Henry Doorly Zoo in omaha, nebraska

On our most recent trip to the zoo, I happened to look up and notice these amazing clouds floating over the Desert Dome. I thought the texture was really neat next to the convex shapes of the panels of the dome,

Ripe for the picking

Photo of the seed head of a prarie grass plant

When I took this photo originally I was planning on it looking like one of those warm, bright, grass waving in the breeze photos. But when I got around to processing it I kind of liked this version better. I really like the contrast between the soft, downy parts of the plant and the little black stems that hold it.

Comfortable in my freckles

Black and white photo of a giraffe from the Henry Doorly zoo in Omaha, Nebraska

I took a couple of hours off to take the kids to the Zoo on thursday, it was 68 degrees in January! Who can pass that up? It was great to wander and take pictures and let the kids play. It still amazes me every time I go there I find something new to shoot. I haven’t migrated to shooting people yet but maybe someday I will. The giraffes were the last stop of the day before I had to go back to work.

A glimpse at the windy city

Photo of the chicago skyline from near the Shed Aquarium

On our vacation two summers ago to attend a family wedding we managed to stop and see the Shed Aquarium in Chicago. It has a great dolphin show, that the kids loved. I really didn’t get any good shots of the aquarium but I did get this one of the Chicago skyline from just off the steps of the Shed Aquarium. We did manage to hit the Cheesecake Factory downtown and wander the streets for a little bit before heading on to our destination.

Old Glory flies over a lone canon at Ft. Atkinson State Historical Park, Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska

Ft. Atkinson State Historical Park in Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska, hosts a living history weekend once a month from  May to November. Volunteers reenact happenings from the for that day of the month from historical logs. They teach visitors a little about how various activities of daily life were carried out. The soldiers fire the canon a few times, the blacksmiths make horseshoes and other necessities in their shop. Our kids really enjoy the adventure, especially the fresh bread and butter in the bakers area.

Buttes rise from the prarie, Badlands National Park

Buttes rise from the prarie, Badlands National Park, South Dakota

I am just beginning to process all the photos I took on our road trip this summer. This is from our first stop Badlands National Park in South Dakota. We were itching to get out of the car and hike, so we searched the park map for the longest trail and took off. This was taken along the Castle Trail, which is accessable at via 3 separate trailheads along hwy 240 in the north section of the park. It is a really nice hike, not too strenuous but it gets very hot, we started early and still managed to run out of water. If you decide to make the trek, start early and take lots of water in the summer.

More Leaves from the Henry Doorly Zoo

Black and White, Nebraska, Places No Comments by Bryon Lippincott
leaf 1

If you read through the blog here you will realize that we spend a lot of time at the Henry Doorly Zoo here in Omaha. The kids love wandering around and looking at all the animals and various hands on exhibits. This past year they added free all you can watch IMAX movies at the LIED IMAX theatre. So we can catch all the latest IMAX Movies as well as get outside and walk around.  The last few times we have visited the zoo I have tried to find and photograph the many different styles, shapes and textures of leaves as we walk through the zoo. I tend to prefer them in black and white, it seems to emphasize the shapes and textures without overwhelming me with green

Sunset on the Plains

Black and White, HDR, Places No Comments by Bryon Lippincott

We took the kids geocaching on a long walk around Weirspan lake in Omaha today. We only found one before we ran out of time and had to seriously start walking. The scenery on the trail tends to be a bit on the boring side for my liking, but we were able to find a baby deer only a few days old while searching for the second geocache. Toward the end of the walk we came upon this little bridge over a small swamp/stream with a great view of the sunset and perfect light.

I often find it hard to transfer a rather generic scene like this, that is very common in Nebraska that does not have any significant land marks to a visually compelling photo. I am finding that the HDR format is definately a significant step in the right direction in transfering what the eyes can take in and process when physically present on the scene, to a finished photo that draws in the eyes and captures the attention

This is a 6 shot HDR bracked at 0.7 EV intervals because that is all my camera will do with auto bracket. I took one set with a starting point of 0 EV and a second set at -1.0 EV and merged them all with photomatix Pro, with a little final editing/ burning and dodging in Photoshop to enhance the shadows.
